Team GB - The End for the Home Nations?

Published by atomickarma at 2:11 pm under International Edit This

Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are in fear for their existence as future international footballing nations following news that FIFA President Sepp Blatter - the last person you go to for a well thought-out opinion - is backing a Team GB football team at the 2012 Olympics .

The Scottish FA for one are pretty vocal in their concerns, noting that while Blatter has said it won’t affect things in future, he’s hardly going to be around for ever.

“Our opposition to Team GB remains resolute.

“Our concern is that Fifa members and Fifa executives in the future would not have the same view as this one - and, subsequently, our status as an independent member would be threatened.”

Blatter has an appalling record as a decision maker, with everything from “kick ins” to referees wearing non-black strips coming from his recommendations.

Leaving it to a man who appears to know less about football than Paris Hilton to make a historical decision that could drastically reshape international football is as ridiculous as it sounds.

The solution is simple, of course - comprise the Team GB squad of Under 21 players from Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland alongside a handful of England full internationals.  These players aren’t full internationals and can be played in the Olympics as Under 21 players, thanks to rules governing amateur participation.

Failing that, field 11 Englishmen.  Then see how much the Scots complain when Team GB takes gold…
