Peace at Anfield

Published by atomickarma at 2:33 pm under English Premier League Edit This

News of the recent peace talks between Liverpool FC’s Spanish manager Rafael Benitez and Chief Executive Rick Parry have failed to leave anything but a bad taste in the mouth at Anfield.

Benitez’ desire to sign Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry - meeting the Midlands club’s exorbitant valuation of £18m - has been a common theme of the summer transfer merry-go-round, with the midfielder happy to break contract to talk to Liverpool and Benitez happy to encourage him amidst rumours of contact with the player transgressing Premier League rules.

Liverpool FC’s American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks didn’t rate Barry at £18m, and nor (does it seem) did Parry. Yet Benitez is the team manager. He has been charged with identifying the players needed to bring a much needed league championship to Liverpool.

Having done that, he’s then been told that he can’t have the players. A difficult position to put the man in, and it has since been revealed that the saga put Benitez within seconds of walking out of the club.

Missing out on Barry probably won’t hurt Liverpool or Benitez - but it will cost them anything higher than a top 4 position in May.
